National Training Center
Muncie is a National Training Center for Circles, having done training among people starting Circles from around the country and among the several other community sites in Indiana.  In September 2008 and April 2010 Muncie hosted two intensive 4 1/2-day Hands on Training sessions for people from communities across the country.

Bridges Out of Poverty Training
TEAMwork also has two certified Bridges Out of Poverty trainers and provides that training in the Delaware County community.  Bridges Out of Poverty:  Strategies for Professionals and Communities, by Phil DeVol, Ruby Payne and Terie Dreussi Smith, helps businesses, agencies and organizations who work with people in poverty have a deeper understanding of their challenges and their strengths.

As part of the community training, TEAMwork requires potential Allies to purchase the book, and, if they desire more in depth information about Bridges, the TEAMwork staff will help to find a national trainer from the aha!process, inc. organization to lead their training.

Poverty Simulation: Thriving in Realville
Trying to survive four “weeks” in poverty becomes an insurmountable effort as people are given an identity and try to keep their bills paid, children fed, get to work or find a job, or handle their unexpected emergencies. Few people are able to survive. This two-hour simulation has been led by TEAMwork more than 80 times in the Delaware County community and elsewhere. The churches, schools, groups, and student organizations and classes who hire this tool to be used have a huge awakening about what it is like to live in poverty.

“ I was so frustrated, overwhelmed, and hopeless during the experience that it was hard to concentrate on how to make things better.”

“ I played a child and realized how little time my family had to focus on me because they were always trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors.”

“I sighed a sigh of relief when I could head home for the evening. I was disturbed to think about how many people in our community have to live the chaotic life I experienced.”

Understanding People in Poverty Training
One of the best ways to understand the motivations and behaviors of people from generational poverty is to take the TEAMwork course, “Understanding People in Poverty.” This class help people explore the patterns and motivations of people in poverty, enhancing the perspective of those who serve this population. There is a two-hour course offered 5-8 times per year. In addition, a longer version targeted to staff groups or service providers can be purchased for organizations and even a second day “Serving People in Poverty” is available for presentation. The two-hour “Understanding People in Poverty” course is required of people as part of their training to become Allies.

“I have taught children living in poverty for almost 20 years. I could not believe how my insight grew as a result of this course.”

“ My intolerance of people breaking societal behavioral rules was changed when I learned how people bring the rules of their own background into every situation.”

“ I didn’t understand how difficult it is to have control over your time when you spend most of your time trying to survive. Planning to prevent issues is impossible when you have to operate in the ‘here’ and ‘now.”

Financial Literacy Training
As part of the partner contract with United Way, TQL is providing literacy training to other agencies serving people in poverty. Adult training sessions and train-the-trainer sessions for the agencies working with youth and children are being taught.

Surviving to Thriving
Key parts of the 15-week Circle Leader training have been offered as part of agency partnerships. In 2015, the YWCA and A Better Way partnered with TEAMwork and a five-part session was TEAMwork’s contribution to the partnership.

To enter a contract to bring in the simulation or the culture competency training to your church or organization, contact TEAMwork 5-8 weeks before you plan to provide the training. In addition, if you want to just get in on somebody else’s session, check the calendar to see when and how to attend a simulation or a class.
